Life On Lake Jesup
Located in Seminole County, Lake Jesup spans approximately 10,000 acres of open water and wetlands that provide habitat for alligators, Bald Eagles, wading birds, wild boars, bobcats, and other native species.
This natural setting is at the heart of The Black Hammock experience. Airboat rides take guests out onto the lake, while back on shore, the restaurant, Lazy Gator Bar, entertainment, and lakeside atmosphere offer plenty of reasons to stick around.
From an airboat adventure to a waterfront meal, a visit here is more than a single stop — it is a chance to experience a different side of Oviedo and Central Florida.
Our Story
how adventure found a home in oviedo
The story of The Black Hammock is closely connected to owner Joel Martin and a life shaped by travel, wildlife, and adventure.
Born in Paris, Joel spent part of his childhood in Africa, where he developed an early connection to wildlife and the outdoors. After returning to France, he served in the Navy before settling in Corsica, where he opened a restaurant and nightclub and kept a small ranch.
His entrepreneurial journey later took him to the French Alps and the French Riviera. In 1995, Joel moved with his family to the United States, choosing Florida for its warm climate and outdoor lifestyle.
That journey eventually brought him to Oviedo.
